Indian Stories

India has a huge collection of all types of stories – be it mythological stories, fairy tales, true stories, moral stories or purely imaginary stories. And children indeed love listening to exciting and entertaining tales.

Children want to listen to stories especially from grandmothers during bedtime. Most Indian stories have reflections of Indian culture and tradition in it. Much of the culture is passed in form of these stories. Children can learn values and ethics through these stories. Indian tales of courage, sacrifice, love, death, magic and adventure truly entices all children.

Many Indian stories have animals, birds, beautiful places, free flowing rivers; majestic mountains which make children enter a complete different world. They enjoy perceiving the imaginary picture that is painted in the story.

Some of the famous Indian stories from mythology are the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. Apart from these, Indian story books like the Panchtantra and the Jataka tales which contain short stories for children are also very famous.

Religion is an important aspect in the lives of most Indians. Children are told many stories about different Gods and Goddesses. True stories of Lord Krishna, Lord Ganesha, Goddess Saraswati, Goddess Durga, Lord Gautam Buddha, and Lord Mahavira are specially told to children to strengthen their faith and belief in God.

Some of the famous bedtime stories told to children include Cinderella, Ali baba and Chalis chor, Little red riding hood, Angulimal, Snow white and the seven dwarfs, The tiger, the Brahmin and the Jackal, the thirsty crow, the intelligent monkey etc. Apart from these stories on kings like Asoka, Akbar (and Birbal), Aurangzeb, Shivaji Maharaj etc are also told to children.

Apart from these, stories on famous Indian and international personalities like Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Mother Teresa, Swami Vivekananda, Mirza Galib etc form a part of children’s stories.
